
On Tuesday, March 1, 2016, Daniel James Chaffers, a native of Crowley and longtime resident of Oakland, California, was called by the angels to come home for eternal rest.
Daniel was one of nine children born on July 25, 1949, to the late Alvin Chaffers and Odelia Clement Chaffers in Crowley. He was baptized at an early age at St. Theresa Catholic Church where, as a young boy, HE participated as a dedicated altar server. As a young adult, Daniel remained a faithful member and choir member of St. Theresa until his move to Oakland. It was then that he became a fervent member of St. Benedict Catholic Church where he served as a member of the Knights of St. Peter Claver Council #336 and the Voices of St. Benedict Choir.
Daniel attended St. Theresa Elementary Catholic School and was a 1968 graduate of H.C. Ross High School. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in pre-med and biology from Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge in 1972. After his graduation from college, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and actively served four years. Daniel continued military duty in the Air Force and Army Reserve and began his career work as a nurse at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in Oakland.
Daniel (Doc or Dixie Bell) was known by many was a man of exceptional faith, warmth, knowledge and an extreme love for family. He had passionate adoration for Mary our Blessed Mother and was a whiz with the game of Jeopardy. His natural ability to sing uplifted the hearts of so many.
He leaves to mourn his passing and cherish his memory one brother, Alvin R. Chaffers (Willie Bea) of San Francisco, California; four sisters, Madeline C. Stillwell of Upper Marlboro, Maryland; Elizabeth Chaffers-Miller of Oakland, California; and Christine C. Dugar and Antoinette Pete (Leonard), both of Crowley.
Bereavement and special memories are also shared by his nephew, Leonard D. Pete of Oakland; five nieces, Michelle Joseph (Tylerton) of Killeen, Texas; Latisha Whitworth (Brian) of Edgewood, Maryland; Deanna Stillwell of Upper Marlboro; Quandra Chaffers of San Francisco and Bethani Pete of Gretna; two great-nephews, Tyshon Joseph of Killeen and Brayden Whitworth of Edgewood, Maryland; two great-nieces, Ja’Tyrah Joseph of Killeen and Brielle Whitworth of Edgewood; a special uncle, Henry Clement (Margaret) of Oakland; a loving and caring aunt, Eva Clement of Crowley; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
Daniel was preceded in death by his parents Alvin and Odelia Chaffers; twin brothers, Raymond and Rene Chaffers; one sister, Delia Chaffers; and his godchild, Daphine Freeman.
A Memorial Mass celebration will be held Saturday, April 2, at 10 a.m. at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Crowley. Fr. Godwin Imoru will serve as officiant for the Mass.
