Ralph Leroy Cowen, 96, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 15, 2016, in Crowley. He was born Sept. 5, 1919, in Midland to Ralph Richard and Margaret Pearl Cowen. He was married for 67 years to the love of his life, Katharine Jenkins Cowen, of Crowley and together they traveled all around the U.S. in their RV and then to Europe, China and Australia. Ralph enjoyed entertaining friends and family, reading, hunting, baking pies and cookies, boiling crawfish, among many other interests.
He graduated from Crowley High School in 1936 and then attended LSU, from which he graduated in 1940 with a B.S. Degree in Agronomy. While at LSU, he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and participated in the purchase of the first Mike the Tiger by donating 25 cents. He was an avid LSU tiger fan attending home football games until he was in his 80’s. He enrolled as an advanced student in ROTC and was granted a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant. Upon graduation he entered the army and served in field artillery and saw service overseas in the European Theatre as a convoy officer.
As a farmer, he grew rice and soybeans as well as raising cattle and quarter horses in the Midland area for 30 years (1946-1976). He was President of the Louisiana Rice Festival in 1956 and Farmer of the Year in 1972. He served as President of the Acadia Cattlemen’s Association, President of the Louisiana Rice Council and vice-president and board member of the Rice Council for Market Development. He served as a member of the Louisiana Rice Promotion Board, the Parish Farm Bureau, Acadia Rice Growers Association, Crowley Chamber of Commerce, agricultural development consultant for the Anheuser-Busch to Brazil, South America; and was on the feasibility study team for Hawaiian Agronomics in Indonesia. He was also a delegate to the 1974 Louisiana Constitutional Convention.
Ralph enjoyed participating in the Crowley Rotary Club for 50 years, serving as President in 1970-1971 and as Governor of District 620 in 1981-1982. He was a board member of the Crowley American Legion Hospital and a lifelong member of V.F.W Post# 6720.
Growing up he was an Eagle Scout and a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church in Crowley serving in many areas such as chairman of the administrative board, board of trustees, a member of the pastor-parish relations committee, and taught adult Sunday school.
He is preceded in death by his wife Katharine Jenkins Cowen; sister, Vera Mae Buchannan; brother, Henry Cowen; mother, Margaret Pearl Cowen and his father Ralph Richard Cowen.
He is survived by four daughters and three sons-in-law, “Kay” Katharine Keigley of Pensacola, Florida, “Libby” Elizabeth and James Adams of Houston, Texas, Martha and Walter Higgins of Ship Bottom New Jersey, and Ann and Joel Marroquin of Houston; 11 grandchildren, David (Carri) Keigley, Brian (Ashley) Keigley, Laura (Christian) Savoie, Scott (Melanie) Adams, Karen Rocha, Richard (Margaret) Higgins, Cory Higgins, Rebecca (Brian) Nealis, Matthew Higgins, Neil Marroquin and Erica Marroquin; 16 great-grandchildren, Lucas, Jordan, Grace and Tristan Keigley; Toler and Stella Keigley; Alex Savoie; Wren, Callan and Davis Adams; Gavin and Kylie Rocha; Christian and Callie Higgins; Colin and Nolan Nealis.
The family is requesting visiting hours to be held Thursday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home and Friday from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church. A reception will start at noon prior to the funeral service Friday, March 18, at 3 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, Crowley, LA. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
